Program Presenter: Joan Di Paola, RN, DCS

Joan Di Paola has been a Registered Nurse for the past 44 years in the field of Geriatrics with extensive leadership experience in acute care settings, long term care facilities and was involved in the start of a medical adult day program for seniors with a diagnosis of cognitive impairment in Rockleigh, NJ in 1998 as well as directing a non-medical home care agency.  Joan is a Dementia Care Specialist, Certified Educator, receiving her credentials from Crisis Prevention Institute.

Joan Di Paola has been a Registered Nurse for the past 44 years in the field of Geriatrics with extensive leadership experience in acute care settings, long term care facilities and was involved in the start of a medical adult day program for seniors with a diagnosis of cognitive impairment in Rockleigh, NJ in 1998 as well as directing a non-medical home care agency. Joan is a Dementia Care Specialist, Certified Educator, receiving her credentials from Crisis Prevention Institute. The certification has enabled her to facilitate classes in educating staff to the best abilities approach in dementia care. It is the framework of understanding about the stages of dementia and approaches to care. This certification also included behavior management and prevention strategies to minimize and/or prevent distressing or challenging behaviors. Joan has also been trained in the Positive Care Approach by the world's leading advocate and educators for anyone living with Dementia, Teepa Snow and continues to take courses and to enhance her knowledge and approaches in the field of dementia. Joan Di Paola was excited to join the management team at Harmony Village at CareOne in Paramus in 2017, as the Director of Program Development. Joan has been working closely with the residents, family members, and has provided staff education on the user friendly approaches in an effort to promote quality of life and quality of care. Joan has also been very instrumental in assessing residents moving into the Harmony Village settings to determine their highest level of functioning while providing with just the right challenges to maximize independence. As the Senior Director for the Dementia Care Specialists, Joan will be overseeing those specialists who are providing programs and education in all the Harmony Care facilities in New Jersey. With her dedication and passion for caring with persons living with Dementia, Joan remains committed to developing and supporting the right living environments for those with cognitive impairment to promote best practices in dementia care. These environments will provide opportunities to use one's life story to development peer relationships, promote best ability to function promote choice and independence and will honor and celebrate the residents individual achievements. Joan Di Paola has been named an honoree for the second annual Pinnacle Awards presented by McKnight's for the category, Thought Leader!
