As we anticipate gathering with family and friends to celebrate upcoming holidays, we spotlight November, National Family Caregiver Month, designated each year since 1977. It is a wonderful time to recognize the vital role family caregivers provide for older adult loved ones. It is a great time to consider the toll caregiving often takes on the caregiver. And it is a perfect time to say “thank you” to each of you who cares about and is providing care for an older adult loved one.
Family caregivers provide a wide range of important and meaningful activities. Managing housework, yard work, or running errands for your older loved ones; handling their finances, preparing meals, or arranging medical appointments; providing transportation, emotional support, or hands-on personal care; continually being “on,” ready to respond to whatever need or concern may arise, or making extremely difficult decisions about your loved one’s care, family caregivers truly are key in an older adults’ life and health. Whether “family” by birth or by choice, because of you, your loved one’s life is enhanced and our world is better.
As you care for those dear to you, please remember to take care of yourself. Please also know you are not alone on this caregiver journey. Having cared for our own parents, we know the joys – and the challenges – of caring for an older adult loved one. If we or your local ACAP chapter can help you gain needed information, learn about meaningful resources, or simply provide a listening ear, please do let us know.
May you be blessed as you bless.
