Helping Aging Parents Stay Independent through Movement & Nutrition

Ask any person over the age of 65, and they’ll tell you they’re losing muscle mass and strength — quickly! In fact, adults can lose 3–8% of their muscle mass every decade after the age of 30. This episode addresses the body’s progression as we age, and how caregivers can help their aging loved ones stay fit well into their senior years. Our guests are Meg Picklesimer, a registered dietician, and Jason White, a physical therapy assistant, both from Senior TLC.

“There are only four kinds of people in the world. Those who have been caregivers. Those who are currently caregivers. Those who will be caregivers, and those who will need a caregiver.”

We Understand Your Challenges Because We’ve Been In Your Shoes

ACAP’s founder has faced the joys, trials, and frustrations of trying to provide care for an aging parent. The inspiration for ACAP came when Frances Hall discovered there were other faculty and staff at the university where she worked who also felt a need for support as they cared for their parents. This initial insight has blossomed into a growing community with chapters across several states.

“My sister and I have attended the Winston-Salem, NC, ACAP Chapter meetings since they began in 2018. We depend on ACAP and do not think we could have endured this caregiver journey with our father and stepdad without their help. If they do not have an answer, they can always refer us to the right resource who does.”

Caregiver for father

“Two specific programs offered by ACAP chapters have had major impacts on my caregiving journey with my parents. A livestreamed program from ACAP Winston-Salem on hospital stays and discharge gave me the tools I needed to manage my dad’s admission and discharge, saving us time and money. An in-person program sponsor (LegalShield) at an ACAP Hickory/Foothills program provided a resource that I am now using to guide my mother and me through estate planning and asset protection. I am so grateful for ACAP and its wonderful programs!”
